2. Community Love

Community Love ... & Psychology

Humans are community creatures, we thrive when we are part of a loving family or group.

Most of our wounds however were instilled in collective settings,

so we tend to avoid or have difficulty relating in groups AND we seek them, as that is where the healing is ultimately found.

Consciously designing our Evolutionary Family or Activist Support Group  is as essential as caring for the soil of a garden or forest: quite basic & sneglected or left to chance at our peril.

From Gaia University Site  - thanks fr this great meme

The Patrix (a Gaia University coinage meaning the 'patriarchal matrix' or matrix of oppression) is an ever present, potent and frequently invisible shape-maker of human cultures. It consists of thousands of dysfunctional thought patterns (memes) that function as a mutually supporting complex, interlocking system. These memes are installed in our individual, community and cultural operating systems sometimes by contagion or by accident, and more often by patterns of oppression.

patrix bulldozerNone of us are free of the Patrix and its dehumanizing effects, although it seems that people who live in closer connection to nature may have more opportunity to heal from it as do people who actively bring their Patrix patterns into view and who have good technique and support to deconstruct them.

At Gaia University we ask ourselves and all associates to include deconstruction of the Patrix on our lifelong agendas. We do this to weaken the possibility that we may unwittingly be vectors of its transmission and to increase the possibility that our designs for ecosocial regeneration are free of (at least) its worst aspects.

Since 2006, when we introduced this work to the curriculum, we have observed that as a person moves towards becoming Patrix-free they liberate increasingly flexible intelligences, more capacity and attention for resolving apparently contradictory issues, and a much better ability to understand other peoples' thinking (see Becoming an Ally) while lessening their own habits of self-distrust. We use re-evaluation counseling as the primary technique for this essential work.

Crossroads: Labor Pains of a New Worldview
is a documentary exploring the depths of the current human condition
and the emergence of a worldview that is recreating our world
from the inside out.

Ash Comformity Experiments

During the 1950s, Solomon Asch conducted and published a series of laboratory experiments that demonstrated the degree to which an individual's own opinions are influenced by those of a majority group. Together, these experiments are recognized as the Asch conformity experiments or the Asch Paradigm.

Stanford Prison Experiment

The Stanford prison experiment was a study of the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. The experiment was conducted at Stanford University from August 14 to August 20 of 1971 by a team of researchers led by psychology professor Philip Zimbardo.

On August 20, 1971, Zimbardo announced the end of the experiment to the participants. The results of the experiment have been argued to demonstrate the impressionability and obedience of people when provided with a legitimizing ideology and social and institutional support. The experiment has also been used to illustrate cognitive dissonance theory and the power of authority.

The results of the experiment favor situational attribution of behavior rather than dispositional attribution. In other words, it seemed that the situation, rather than their individual personalities, caused the participants' behavior. Under this interpretation, the results are compatible with the results of the Milgram experiment, in which ordinary people fulfilled orders to administer what appeared to be agonizing and dangerous electric shocks to a confederate of the experimenter.

Ecology And Addiction

Ecology 101: Distraction = Destruction

The common thread, the single defining dynamic underlying all our ecological, personal, and social problems seems to be that we have come to focus our consciousness and desires not on inner richness and development, but instead on outer, material distractions.

We have pursued the accumulation of material wealth far, far beyond our physical needs—unnecessarily pushing the limits of our planet's support systems to the point of failure, and actually contrary to our emotional needs.

Run Away!

"Self-Will Run Riot"

Alcoholics Anonymous definition of addictive behavior

I believe our consumptive lifestyles are ultimately based on a desire to avoid contact with our deeper feelings of emptiness and unknowing in the face of incomprehensible Life.

Dazzled by our tastes and toys, we are a planet of addicts willfully destroying the life of our planet in our refusal to face the unmanageable aspects of our own life energies.

Addiction is Universal

The behaviors which function as addictions—whether to the news, drugs, sex, 'knowing' or 'being right,' work, anger, 'saving' people, television, shopping, talking... the list is as endless as the number of humans—are all merely symptoms of an underlying, universal dynamic of avoiding the wounded and/or too-vast places within us. Addiction—running away from who we really are, in any of its forms—is the rule, instead of the exception we tell ourselves it is.

You can never get enough of what you don't really want.

“People use drugs, legal and illegal, because their lives are intolerably painful or dull.
They hate their work and find no rest in their leisure.
They are estranged from their families and their neighbors.
It should tell us something that in healthy societies drug use
is celebrative, convivial, and occasional,
whereas among us it is lonely, shameful, and addictive.
We need drugs, apparently, because we have lost each other.

“The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers & cities;
but to know someone who thinks & feels with us,
& who, though distant, is close to us in spirit,
this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden.”

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

by helping others to succeed"

“And there are never really endings, happy or otherwise.
Things keep going on, they overlap and blur,
your story is part of your sister's story is part of many other stories,
and there is no telling where any of them may lead.”

Erin Morgenstern, The Night Circus

Sexism Patterns

It is interesting that amongst so much discussion & concern around creating healthier romantic relationships & also healthier groups, there is so little (if any) attention put in those discussions to the mega-pattern of sexism in our society, which hurts men as much as it hurts women, as feminists have always said.

This should be of particular interest to ecologists as there are striking parallels to how the Earth is treated ("Mother Earth") & how women, as a group, are treated in patriarchal societies.     So here is to the integral perspective on all this, some great resources to consider:

http://bit.ly/SexismPatterns >> is a great resource in the e-book (the Integral Permaculture Designers Manual) on all this, to which we celebrate Women's Day 2013 by adding these:

Experts from the End Violence Against Women Coalition, Imkaan, Southall Black Sisters, Eaves, Object, Anti-Porn Men and leading academics give insights into the factors that drive and perpetuate violence against women and girls and what we need to do to end it. As the experts in this film make clear, it is the lack of political will, not a lack of solutions, that is holding us back from eliminating VAWG.

A Call to Men

to end violence against women

A CALL TO MEN is a leading national men's organization addressing men's violence against women, and the eradication of sexism, while maintaining strong coalitions with women's organizations already doing this important work. We help to organize communities in order to raise awareness and get men involved in ending violence against women. www.acalltomen.org

A CALL TO MEN believes that ending violence against women is primarily the responsibility of men. Although historically it has been almost entirely women who have been at the forefront addressing this issue, we think it is essential that men play a primary role in the solution to end it. To do that, well-meaning menmen who, for the most part don't see themselves as part of the problemneed to get involved.

By strategizing with groups across the United States, our vision is to shift social norms that define manhood in our culture, and produce a national movement of men committed to ending violence against women. A CALL TO MEN is unique in its ability to be affirming and respectful to the experiences of women while expressing genuine care and hope for men. Through seminars, workshops and other educational vehicles, A CALL TO MEN challenges men to reconsider their long held beliefs about women, in an effort to create a more just society.
